Renraku Computer Systems (RCS) is the third largest megacorporation in the world.
Business profile
Renraku is fundamentally, as the name implies, a computer technology and services corporation. Long known primarily for its data processing, algorithms and Semiautonomous Knowbots, the corporation was able to compete with the largest megacorporation at the time in the 2050s. Fuchi.[11] In fact, Fuchi licensed many algorithms and program components from Renraku, which held patents and IP rights for them.[12] Together with NeoNET, Renraku is the top manufacturer of computer hardware.[13] Renraku is also a leader in the field of computer software.[14]
However, Renraku has always had other mainstays. One that has become very important since the Second Crash of 2064 is services. The name of the company - which translates as Renraku Communication - says it all.[15] As early as the 2050s, Renraku was a service provider in all Matrix matters, offering computing time, server space, support and system design.[11] In addition, thanks to Inazo Aneki's fascination with sociology[11], the corporation invested heavily in sociological research and linguistics early on - which proved to be the mega-corporation's salvation after the debacle in SCIRE.
The corporation also controls large parts of the Asian Gitter.[16] Renraku is also very present in the cybertech sector, both as a provider of systems and as a supplier, the latter mainly via Iris firmware.[17] Renraku's cybernetics division remains one of the most renowned to this day, as the group continues to produce some of the best microelectronics, microcontrollers and microenergy systems on the market. In the past, it was only surpassed by Spinrad Industries when it presented its new, optimized and modular cyber limbs.[18]
In addition, Renraku is one of the leading corporations in nanotechnology, not only, but of course also due to findings from the debacle with the SCIRE. Its findings continue to be incorporated into all of the group's products, even though Renraku had to work hard to regain the trust of users after the Deus debacles.[19]
And finally, under the impact of the Nakatomi Doctrine, Renraku has become a true Big Data corporation. Renraku aggressively secured national management contracts in South America and Africa after 2067, and along with its already large consumer databases, Renraku became the corporation with the largest data trove,[20] perhaps with the exception of Horizon.[21] Meanwhile, Renraku operates the SIN databases[20] of over 150 independent nation-states.[22]
With these rarely obtrusively marketed but ever-present activities, Renraku is the third largest company in the world and the second largest in the Japanese Empire.[4] Its headquarters are in Chiba in the Neo-Tokyo megasprawl. With Izom Armaments (formerly Keruba International), Renraku also owns one of the founders of the Corporate Court, and thus holds a permanent seat in the court.[23]
History
The Beginnings
Renraku is one of the oldest megacorporations in the Sixth World. And its story begins in a very unexpected place for a Japanese megacorporation - in Slovenia.[4]
Keruba International was a weapons corporation - manufacturing as well as trading.[4] The corporation, founded 2010 by Kerpan Ubavlr,[24] began as a consortium of heavy industry and defense companies.[24] In the turmoil of the first 30 years of the 21st century, the corporation became rich from the many wars raging elsewhere - Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Border Wars - were raging. So rich that the corporation expanded into heavy industry, software and telecommunications technology.[24] Rich enough that he was able to buy his way into the corporate court.[4]
And Keruba was rowdy - so aggressive that it 2012 in a conflict with BMW (shortly before it was taken over by Lofwyr and transformed into Saeder-Krupp) that the Inter-Corporate Council (the predecessor organization of the Corporate Court) was created as a mediation medium to prevent such conflicts and the billions of dollars in costs that would result from them in the future.[25] This did not stop Keruba from further armed conflicts with the ORO Corporation, which would later become Aztechnology.[26]
Many corporations did not like Keruba's aggressiveness - and when Keruba lay shattered after the Crash of '29, its founder dead in a plane crash over Dulles in the wake of the crash,[27] no one shed a tear for the corporation. But one man saw an opportunity - Inazo Aneki.[4]
The shrewd investor and former Shiawase citizen[28] used a huge loan to buy the company under the name of his holding company Renraku[29] Keruba International.[27] On April 12, 2029, the deal became public.[30] Keruba was then renamed Renraku, and in the following years[30] the headquarters were moved from Slovenia, which was dying in the Euro Wars, to the safety of Chiba, Japan,[28] and the new group was restructured from a loose portfolio to a modern Japanese megacorporation.[29]
Although he had planned to simply dismantle the dying Keruba corporation, Inazo Aneki also kept the weapons division,[27] which, renamed Izom Armaments, is still active today and an important subsidiary of Renraku.[28] During the Eurowars, the young Renraku profited extraordinarily from this subsidiary. The wars provided the young corporation with much-needed revenue.[31]
The rise
In the years that followed, Renraku was the small fish in the shark tank.[28] The Matrix became Renraku's new core area, and military technology quickly became less important. While still Keruba, the company had developed some now very profitable patents on data compression and other things. This was now paying off.[29] By 2024, the group had achieved another early coup with the implementation of the Digital XScan codec as a global Trideo standard, which is still in use today, and which was now generating profits.[32]
In an effort to avoid being swallowed up by any of the real mega-corporations, Renraku simply did everything that was beneath the dignity of Fuchi and other AAA corporations of the time. And it paid off. The group was able to amass a lot of money and was instrumental in rebuilding the computer networks after the crash.[28]
Inazo Aneki became lethargic during this time, enjoying his wealth too much.[28] However, corruption among the execs was a major problem that the top management did not address soon enough.[33] In fact, the situation 2038 was so bad that the name Renraku had become synonymous with corruption and waste. In addition, the payments on Aneki's large loan to take over Keruba International became increasingly overwhelming, and Renraku had to restructure its debt several times, which the megacorporation only managed to do thanks to its shares in Global Financial Services, the predecessor of Zurich-Orbital Community Bank.[34]
It was only when some shareholders - who saw their investment crumbling[11] - tried to throw Aneki out of the group that the latter took action against corruption and consolidated his position in the group, purged it of unprofitable elements, and put Renraku back on the road to profit. To do this, he had a plethora of voting securities issued to shrink the shares of the recalcitrant investors.[11] This daring maneuver worked, but cost him a great deal of personal wealth and most of his shares in the corporation.[11] But in return, it brought back the old corporate shark Aneki.[28]
In 2045, the biggest corruption problems were solved. Inazo Aneki's thorough purge of the ranks of Renraku's management, from top to bottom, had consolidated the corporation from an erratic bunch of subsidiaries, each doing their own thing, into a tightly organized, if somewhat stolid, corporate empire. The military division Renrakus was hit the hardest, with large parts of it being sold off.[34]
On September 10 2040[35] Renraku laid the foundation stone for an extremely ambitious project for the time: the construction of the Seattler Renraku Arcology.[36]
In the 2050ss, Renraku, like other megacorporations, was engaged in research on the metagenes, and is among the first to perform a successful metatype adaptation.[37]
Infinite Expanses
Renraku introduce on September 18, 2049[38] as the first megacorporation to introduce an intelligent pre-AI system, a Semiautonomous Knowbot.[39] However, the megacorporation continued its research, its goal being full, sapient artificial intelligence. The project, under the direction of the later CEO Sherman Huang, enjoyed Inazo Aneki's full attention, highest priority and greatest possible secrecy. Renraku was years ahead of any competition at the time.[40] Even though there were attempts to infiltrate the project (such as the infiltration of a deep cover agent by United Oil), Renraku's security department was vigilant and was able to stop them.[41]
And only a few years later, presumably 2050[42] or 2051[43], something monstrous happened: one of these SKs awoke into an AI.[44]
This AI, which called itself Morgan, quickly escaped Renraku's network to pursue its own goals. Unwilling to give up his creature, into which so much corporate resources and Nuyen had been poured, Renraku doggedly pursued the Artificial Intelligence, and was finally able to capture it in 2058.[42]
Parts of the captured AI were used to build the Arcology Expert System, which would later become Deus. Other parts escaped again and formed into a new AI Megaera.[42]
Renraku was one of the corporations involved in the 2055 concerted military action to end Status F in Berlin.[45] In addition, the 2060 group was in charge, together with Proteus, of establishing the futile embargo against the anarchists in the eastern part of the city.[46]
Three years of happiness
More than ten years later - 2057 - things were going very well for Renraku. The company quickly climbed the technology ladder and released one groundbreaking innovation after another. The position of the then market leader Fuchi began to falter.[44] There are rumors that an immortal Elf named Leonardo[47] under the alias Dr. Antonio Vieri[44] shared his vast knowledge in the field of computer technology with Renraku at the time, for unknown reasons.[48] Renraku gained a technological advance over competitors that may have amounted to 10 years in some areas.[34]
Be that as it may, the years between 2057 and 2059 were golden years for Renraku, in which the corporation stormed to the forefront of progress, leaving even Fuchi behind, and there could be no limit to Inazo Aneki and his megacorporation.[44]
The Corporate War
2057 After Darktooth's death, Miles Lanier became one of Renraku's major shareholders when he received shares of Renraku stock from the dragon.[49] Miles Lanier moved to Renraku, and thanks to his insider information and Renraku's groundbreaking innovations, Fuchi was increasingly able to be countered.[50]
In 2059, many problems arose for the group, damaging Renraku financially and publicly. After a change in leadership was almost certain, the Renraku network suffered huge data breaches. An aggressive computer virus is blamed.[44] The majority of their innovations were lost.
Arguably worse was that Miles Lanier turned out to be a spy for Richard Villiers' Fuchi division[51] and left the group for Fuchi again.[52] When Fuchi finally went under during the Corporate War, Shikei Nakatomi Fuchi-Asia to Renraku - which had also suffered losses in the course of the conflict - and bought himself a position on the board of directors.[52]
Renraku had emerged from the corporate war with a black eye, thanks to a friendly takeover of a third of the former Fuchi Industrial Electronics, but it had already suffered losses.[53]
Nevertheless, the Group suffered a significant loss: On March 26, 2060, one of Renraku's judges at the Corporate Court falls victim to an assassination attempt.[54] The megacorporation loses this seat forever.
The shutdown
In December 2059, the Renraku Arcology in Seattle suddenly and completely sealed itself off from the outside world. Shortly after the arcology shutdown, on February 3 2060, CEO Inazo Aneki disappeared.[54] Renraku gave out no official information about this. Rumor has it that he was in Tibet.[52] Some time later, a rumor circulated in the Shadows that the AI Deus had taken over the arcology.[55]
For Renraku, the AI was an absolute disaster. In order to keep Deus under control and limited to the SCIRE, all autonomous and semi-autonomous systems that Renraku had installed or maintained were subjected to a strict audit. Likewise, the entire PLTG was taken offline, and weeks of offline backups (which Renraku, in keeping with his conservative, cautious nature, had taken) were reconciled to undo any tampering that Deus had done undetected. All this while Renraku did his best to cover up the true extent of the Crisis.[27]
In addition, the Metroplex Guard had mobilized in Seattle and sealed off the Arcology. Tough negotiations and many threats later, the furious Seattle government (whose Governor Marilyn Schultz was among the victims) and the megacorporation agreed to cooperate with the armed forces in recapturing the SCIRE.[56]
By 2061, many inhabitants of the SCIRE were able to escape. Aneki returned from Tibet and, with the Otaku group Overwatch, was able to defeat the out-of-control AI Deus seemingly destroyed. Afterward, Inazo Aneki committed suicide Suicide.[44] His position was taken over by Haruhiko Nakada, who had previously replaced him. It would take until 2065 for Renraku to publicly acknowledge the death of its founder.[20]
In 2063, the Renraku arcology was deemed safe again by a UCAS task force. It was turned over to the Metroplex government by the corporation, as Renraku could not or would not pay the bill for the UCAS Army's recapture of the arcology. Due to the loss of face in the Arcology Debacle, Renraku America subsequently withdrew completely from Seattle's economic stage, no longer showing a physical presence there in 2070 and only represented in the Matrix and through subsidiaries.[57]
The Crash
2062, nodes of Deus' Network Renraku were first noticed during the inspection of rescued Arcology victims.[58] In the lead-up to Second Crash, Renraku was well aware of the threat posed by Deus' Network, and cooperated with Shiawase to prevent infiltration by the Network.[59]
During the initial public offering of Novatech in 2064, Sherman Huang - at the time CEO of Renraku - attempted a hostile takeover of the competitor[60] and failed. As he massively violated corporate law in the process (and burned through enormous amounts of Renraku funds)[61], he was sentenced to many years in prison after the Crash of 2064.[62] In addition, Samantha Villiers unsuccessfully attempted to take over Renraku, whose shares had fallen in the run-up to the Novatech IPO.[63]
The Crash wounded an already ailing company again where it really hurts. Renraku's Matrix research department suffered major data losses, and the megacorporation's reliance on data was also its undoing. Fortunately, Renraku had not been completely careless: There were offline backups, and even the Asian [Telecom]] grids were still in Renraku's hands.[62]
By hosting the Second Universal Matrix Converence 2065 in Edinburgh, along with Transys-Erika, Renraku was able to get back into the headlines of the Newsfax services in a positive way and slowly saw light at the end of a long tunnel.[64]
Reconstruction and disorientation
After two devastating blows, things were not looking good for the group. Even with Sherman Huang out of the way and rotting in a corporate prison, Renraku had to reinvent itself in order to rise to its former power.[15]
Renraku made the best of a terrible situation when the corporation tried to turn Deus' atrocities into usable research and products. While no longer the masters of Renraku arcology, Renraku still had plenty of agents and units in place, and was able to secure many interesting samples and data collections.[65]
Further disasters followed, for which Renraku was only partially to blame, but which nevertheless also affected the megacorporation. The Ring of Fire disaster of 2061. The End of the Yamato Era. The Second Crash. The Ghost Decade, which paralyzed Japan and its megacorporations. During this difficult time, Renraku was under the leadership of Haruhiko "Harry" Nakada, formerly COO under Inazo Aneki and Sherman Huang.[20]
Nakada's strategy was to open up new markets in parts of the world where Renraku's reputation had not suffered so much, a massive expansion into the southern hemisphere, whose markets the other AAA Groups were criminally neglecting. Unfortunately, this was not the desired liberating blow. Renraku's products were aimed primarily at the middle class, neither truly high-tech nor mass-produced cheap goods such as Aztechnology and Wuxing could produce, and it was precisely this class that was poorly represented in its designated expansion areas.[66]
Renraku also had to face the reality that the "New Way" of Tenno Yasuhito required a new attitude towards metahumanity and magic. The Yasuhito Ideal reforms cost the group some of its privileges at court, and Tenno's close ties to Shiawase further limited Renraku's influence.[20]
Yamato-Damashii
The late 2060s and early 2070s were a difficult time for Japan's corporations. Between a no longer imperial Tenno and his Japan's withdrawal from occupied territories and strengthening and new competitors, they spent a lot of time fighting each other. In the mid 2070s, however, they came to their senses and renewed the alliance that had enabled their rise at the beginning of the 21st century. Yamato-Damashii, the belief in Japanism Exceptionalism, was back.[67]
And just in time for Renraku.[67] Renraku had initially slept through the construction of the WiFi Matrix, the company had been too plagued by internal problems.[15] Shikei Nakatomi, formerly one of the founders of Fuchi, who had rescued himself into Renraku's arms together with Fuchi Asia, helped Renraku out of its lethargy - and turned the company upside down. Away from the Matrix focus, towards a combination of Big Data and services.[68] Fortunately for Renraku, the Crash had also hit the other megacorporations hard, so its vulnerability was not used to break up the corporation.[66]
Renraku was still in rough seas, but at least not in a hurricane.[69] But the corporation was rather floundering, robbed of its drive with the death of its visionary founder.[66] Harry Nakada failed to put Renraku back on the road to success, and 2067, at the third quarter shareholders' meeting, Nakada publicly committed suicide. His successor, Surin Supachei, an old loyalist Aneki, brought back Shikei Nakatomi as chairman of the board.[20] And he began a corporate shakeout and a streamlining and realignment campaign the likes of which Renraku had not seen since the 2030s[70]
With Supachei, he began - on November 3 2074, Shikei Nakatomi's hard-pressed President Renraku committed Seppuku, taking the rest of the blame for Renraku's poor performance over the past 10 years. He was succeeded by the former division head of Renraku Americas (before its split), Orito Sasaki, a loyalist of Shikei Nakatomi-and a Nisei.[70]
A combination of awareness of his un-Japanese heritage and the emerging success of the service strategy legitimized the new course from the perspective of most Renraku corporate citizens. The service to every customer that was now required and the spiritualization of the corporation after a long period of buck-passing by Inazo Aneki and his loyalists were acceptable after the public suicide of the corporation's father.[70] Thus began Renraku's transformation into a service and big data corporation.[20]
A new image, which the corporation laboriously built up to get rid of its reputation as a "mega-racist mega-corporation that produces murderous AIs", proved difficult to achieve, but with effort.[71] The service corporation model, and an aggressive acquisition strategy, allowed Renraku a growth spurt that made the corporation the third largest AAA corporation in the world.[68] The alliance with MCT and Shiawase kept Renraku's back free.[71] As in the beginning of its history, Renraku is now once again the servant and friend that helps its allies. But this time Shikei Nakatomi is pulling the strings.[70]
Emergence
Before the events surrounding the Technomancer Persecution, Renraku was already one of the corporations researching the new Technomancer phenomenon, drawing on research surrounding the Otaku theme. Rumor has it that they even held some of DEUS's former subordinates captive, who were captured during the recapture. Presumably, this involved Technomancer interfaces and the technological reproduction of their abilities - or the development of technologies to control them. And since Renraku doesn't mind the nature of the research, as long as the right results come out of it, it didn't bode well for the AIPS patients Renraku took under his wing.[72]
Technomancer-Verfolgung
As the witch hunt began in the wake of the Hong Kong Incident, Renraku media, alongside that of MCT and NeoNET, were at the forefront of sowing doubt and distrust of Technomancers. The programs never tired of portraying technomancers as dangerous and uncontrollable and linking them to the Crash of 2064 to further stoke fears.[73] After Mitsuhama took the lead in the pursuit, Renraku quickly assumed a similar position.[74] In doing so, Renraku proceeded mainly out of conviction, as they were convinced of the Technomancers' dangerousness due to historical reasons.[75]
The corporation also offered a bounty for the capture of living Technomancers.[74] However, Renraku's zero-tolerance strategies caused a whole series of internal problems, as a number of innocent people were blackballed. Subsequently, they lost all rights and were imprisoned, which worried many top scientists and caused productivity to drop.[76]
Artificial intelligences
In August 2070, the Renraku GridSec was able to apprehend an entity named Quicksilver, which was initially thought to be a Sprite. After long observation of the entity, it was captured in the Chiba network when it became apparent that the entity was acting autonomously. On the Chandra Scale, which determines intelligence in Semi-autonomous Knowbots, the AI reached a value of 10. Renraku analyzed the kernel of the AI and was able to find a copyright from Novatech, which was dated 2062. From the report that ended up in Jackpoint, it could be concluded that Renraku was ironically behind in AI research.[77] The group was particularly interested in the nature of the self-evolving core of an AI, as well as its personality matrices.[78]
New threats
KFS caught Renraku off guard, but not defenseless this time. Renraku had no part in the disaster this time (though it was immediately among the prime suspects),[79] and solved the problem by interning all employees and corporate citizens suspected of infection, in cooperation with local authorities.[80] The corporation was only moderately affected, with Genecraft Biodesign in particular struggling with a localized infection.[81] Otherwise, Renraku citizens were primarily caught in the crossfire or fell victim to secondary infections,[79] as infected individuals initially attempted to infiltrate Renraku.[82]
The shutdown in Boston, however, was exploited by Renraku's corporate media for propaganda purposes, in order to make all corporations involved, especially Ares' Knight Errant, looked bad.[83] Renraku was also able to profit from the collapse of NeoNET as a result of the revelation of its main culpability in the KFS outbreak, in the form of changing customers[84] and newly acquired divisions of the dying megacorporation.
Ultimately, Renraku's reaction to contacting Monads was surprising for a corporation with such a mixed and troubled history with AIs. Renraku welcomed Monads,[85] and praised the honorability of presenting oneself openly to the world rather than operating from behind the scenes and from the shadows.[86] However, the conditions the corporation imposed on the Monads were quite oppressive - this is where Renraku's conservatism got in the way again.[85]
Structure
After the death of Inazo Aneki, which was officially announced by Renraku in 2065, the position of CEO officially and forever became that of the late Aneki[20] - now Aneki Inazo no kami, a corporate kami.[4] Officially, the president now fulfills the position of CEO, but in fact all power lies with Renraku's board of directors, specifically the chairman of the board, Shikei Nakatomi.[20]
Renraku has, at least at first glance, a highly diversified ownership structure, with no one person owning more than 10% of the group.[87]
The group has a classic structure, with diversified regional divisions;[87] Renraku Computer Systems, which is actually a global company based in Chiba, merely acts as a holding company that holds and owns these divisions together. It has hardly any employees - only the highest-ranking Renraku Exec, division presidents, board members, their personal staff, and a large number of lawyers and accountants work directly for Renraku headquarters. Their main job is to keep track of exactly what the entire megacorporation owns, and what it is worth.[27] This headquarters provides direction, broad strategies and guidelines, but the real corporate policy is made locally, in the regional divisions.[88]
Each regional division is a separate corporation, but fully owned by the RCS.[27] They obey the RCS Board of Directors under Shikei Nakatomi, but are distinctly different from each other in terms of day-to-day operations and corporate culture.[89]
This structure has advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, it is a burden for internal synergies and cooperation and research and development, as many parts of the group do not know what the others are doing, which naturally leads to redundancies. On the other hand, regional divisions structured in this way can focus much better on the local market and design locally adapted products and services. And the redundancies also make the corporation more resilient to strokes of fate - if one part of the corporation fails (for example, because a malicious AI is currently occupying the corresponding arcology), another can often step into the breach and save Renraku's market share.[88]
The Central Division regularly sends audition teams to regional divisional headquarters to check the books and conduct an audit of divisional effectiveness. The emissaries who lead such inspections have the honorific title of Kansayaku (auditor).[90] These emissaries are much more than simple accountants and auditors. They also audit employees and rid the Renraku family of no-goods and dead projects. A kansayaku spreads fear and terror, like a corporate inquisitor.[91] And he is also sent to solve urgent problems for the corporation with maximum efficiency and minimum consideration for those causing them, such as during the Arcology Crisis 2059 to 2063.[92]
Renraku Africa
Once started as the philanthropic arm of Renraku Europa, Renraku Africa was spun off in the early 2070s when Nigerian industrialist Nwabudike Freeman sold his Freeman Industries weapons and heavy industry conglomerate to Renraku Africa in order to secure a seat on its board of directors.[93] As Freeman Industries was one of the architects of the African WiFi matrix network, which largely manages without hardware backbones and is instead designed purely for ad hoc commlink connections, Renraku was able to take a significant step ahead of all its competitors by acquiring the group.[93]
Renraku Africa operates smaller arcologys in every recognized African state, with the largest in Lagos, where the group has its divisional headquarters. In addition, Renraku Africa also operates the Fraternité arcology in Libreville, which is seen as a gateway to the Congo and which Renraku intends to use to open up the largely uninhabited interior of the continent, depopulated by VITAS and VITAS II and unexplored since the Awakening, and harness it for its purposes.[93]
With its cheap factories in Africa, Renraku has also become the world's largest supplier of cheap everyday fashion.[94]
Still from its days as an altruistic project of Renraku Europe, Renraku Africa is the largest MSP and data processing provider in Africa and parts of the Middle East.[95]
In Africa, Renraku is the primary provider of Talentsoft streaming.[96] In addition, Renraku has large cyberware factories in Africa,[97] which manufacture cyber limbs and talent conduits, among other things. In Africa itself, the group is the leading supplier of Fixed_wired_talent softs.[98]
However, another very important mainstay is the arms trade. Even before the acquisition of Freeman Industries, Izom Armaments' products all over the continent.[95]
Renraku Asia
Renraku Asia encompasses all continental Asian and Japanese operations of the Renraku Group.[87] Renraku Asia is Renraku's most profitable division.[88] That and general sympathies towards it - board chairman Shikei Nakatomi has after all contributed his part of Fuchi to Renraku Asia[99] - mean that it also has by far the biggest budget. Not only that - it's also the easiest place to rise as an Exec. And, in keeping with the traditional nature of Renraku, Japan is the (true) cradle of the group.[88]
Many of Renraku Asia's subsidiaries could promote themselves as AA Groups. Almost a third of Renraku's total sales take place in Renraku Asia's vast empire. The main business is software and computer hardware, but mass production (mainly in China and entertainment (mainly in India) are not far behind, and the service sector is also large. In addition, Renraku can rely on a stable basis here with agriculture.[88]
In the 2060s, Renraku Americas under Sherman Huang managed to steal the show and considerable resources from the Asia Division, but after the Arcology Debacle in Seattle and other setbacks, the "home division" has found its way back to itself and its role as the engine of the megacorporation.[88] While Renraku Americas bowed in disgrace and was eventually crushed, Renraku Asia has become the heart of Renraku research; it is home to by far the majority of the Japanokons laboratories.[100]
Renraku Asia's empire is home to the software innovation of Wakatta Software, as well as the booming aerospace subsidiary Ganbare Aerospace, whose involvement in mass accelerators such as Space Elevator Renraku]] has brought considerable prestige to this previously under-managed sector of the global market.[100]
In India, the former Indonesia and Southeast Asia, Renraku are the primary provider of Talentsoft streaming services.[96] With Terracotta Armaments, Renraku is also the largest arms supplier in Asia.[101]
Renraku Asia is ruled by Kaori Eto, a disciple of Sherman Huang, and a brilliant scientist in his own right. He is considered one of the most technically adept high-ranking Execs in the world, on par with Damien Knight, and more at home in the lab than the corporate boardroom, but he can also hold his own politically when he needs to, as well as being a prominent advocate for Technomancers and AIs within Renraku.[88] He is also rumored to be the father of the latest incarnation of the Matrix.[102]
Renraku Europe
Renraku Europa is where all of Renraku's European operations are bundled together. At one time, Africa was also part of this division,[87] but it was spun off in the 2070s[93] This division has been led by Karl Stadt for over 20 years.[87] Until 2057, Renraku Europa was based in Toulouse in France[103], then the division moved to Munich in the ADL.[104]
Renraku Europe is the most conservative division of an already conservative megacorporation.[104] Neither as large as Renraku Asia, nor as financially strong as the now-split Renraku America, Renraku Europe had to hold its own for a long time in a difficult environment against Saeder-Krupp and other Eurocons, with relatively less market power of its own, and in front of the decidedly demanding European consumers.[104] Renraku Europe is the most conservative division of an already conservative megacorporation. consumers.[95] Renraku Europa is particularly experienced in dealing with Saeder-Krupp. Clearly inferior, the group never directly confronts Lofwyr, but evades it, quickly exploits weaknesses, remains discreet, but more agile than the dragon. Karl Stadt sees himself as Lofwyr's equal in matters of economic policy, and after his long history of success this cannot be entirely dismissed.[105]
Originally, Renraku Europa was built around the remnants of Keruba[104] and Blohm & Voss[95]. This focus proved not to be very effective in the fight against Saeder-Krupp, and Renraku had to look for its market elsewhere - and found it in its core business: services and Big Data.[95] Renraku Europa owns many medium-sized groups in Europe, and uses them to market locally adapted products and customized services.[105]
Renraku Europe is also well positioned in the field of matrix services and, above all, matrix security, and not just since it took over Securitech International AG in 2059.[104] Since Saeder-Krupp during the Second Crash took the European grids off the grid, many businesses distrust the mega-corporation and prefer to secure backups with a trustworthy competitor like Renraku.[105]
Data processing and services are key pillars of Renraku Europe. A newly developed market, however, is high-end biotechnology and cyber medicine. Its medical services bundled under Ferrarius Medical and the many high-class private clinics have earned Renraku a solid reputation in the Cyber Clinic Industry.[95] With Securitech International AG, Renraku also has the largest Matrix security provider in the Sixth World under its corporate umbrella.[95]
In addition to its locations in the ADL[104] (Hamburg,[106] Berlin,[104] Munich[104]), Renraku Europe has large branches in France (Paris),[103] Slovenia (Ljubljana),[104] the United Kingdom (London),[93] the Italian Confederation (Trieste),[104] the United Netherlands (Amsterdam),[104] Spain (Madrid),[104] and Russia (Moscow).[104]
Renraku North America
Renraku America once covered Renraku's holdings and operations on both American continents.[87] In the wake of Shikei Nakatomi's reorganization of the corporation after Inazo Aneki's death, the division was broken up, in both North and South America.[107]
More than almost any other Renraku division, North America suffered from the arcology debacle in the SCIRE.[107] The shock brought the entire division to its knees and remains a barely wounded collective trauma to the group.[108] But that was 20 years ago, and Renraku North America has recovered economically.[107]
Renraku North America is the second division, along with Renraku Asia, that does a lot of production of consumer goods. Renraku has also invested heavily in education and entertainment here.[107] Although many of the software and AI research projects once based in Seattle were moved to Japan after the arcology debacle, there are still many end-user contracts for database management and computing power businesses in North America. North America also remains active in matrix security and firmware development by local developers such as Iris Firmware at the PCC.[107]
And finally, Renraku's customer service centers are located in North America.[107]
In the NAN, Renraku is surprisingly popular. The relationship began with the sale of weapons, remained Renraku, and gained local respect and popularity through its ability to integrate into the local culture (and a cultural conservatism that accommodates the Indians) that is denied to other Japanokons.[107]
Renraku North America is under the direct supervision of President Orito Sakasi.[93]
Renraku Oceania
Renamed four years ago, this division, formerly known as Renraku Australasia, includes Renraku operations in Australia[102] and New Zealand,[99] the Philippines,[105] and Oceania,[33] as well as Bandar Seri Badawan in the former Brunei.[99] It was formed in the early 2050s when the division was spun off from Renraku Asia.[99]
Of all Renraku's divisions, Oceania is the smallest and least conservative.[102] Initially a source of innovative software, the division had already changed direction by the 2060ss, shifting its focus to heavy industry, infrastructure and agriculture.[99] In addition, Oceania is where Renraku's magical research is concentrated.[102]
With the Philippines branch, Renraku Oceania is also the only Japanocon still tolerated in that country. After the downfall of the Baihu Corporation in the Dragon Civil War, Renraku brought much-needed investment to absorb the loss of the corporation as an employer and quell unrest.[105]
Renraku Oceania (then Renraku Australasia) is also the division in which the Elevenish Blue Samurai were founded.[105]
The division is currently led by Noriko Sakai, daughter of President Orito Sakai.[102] After several assassination attempts, she has dismissed her contingent of Red Samurai, significantly expanded the Blue Samurai, and appointed them as her personal bodyguard.[105]
===Renraku South America===. Renraku South America is the newest regional division of Renraku. It was split off from Renraku North America in the 2070s to absorb as many assets as possible from the dying NeoNET in South America.[107]
Regionally, the subdivision in Amazonia is the strongest, where Renraku has gladly filled the vacuum left by Horizon's retreat after the lost war against Aztlan. After the great losses of the Awakened Amazonian]] forces, Amazonia is now building up its regular metahuman forces, with readily accepted help from Renraku.[107]
Corporate culture
Renraku's corporate culture is strongly grounded in the teachings of the corporate kami Inazo Aneki. The core is a conservative corporate culture characterized by Japanese culture and tradition, which is also upheld within the group.[107] However - and this is where Renraku differs from Shiawase and MCT - Renraku has no problem approaching other cultures locally and accepting their local wisdom. Renraku means communication, and in this the megacorporation is astonishingly effective, despite all its traditionalism. The result is an astonishingly effective synthesis of a conservative core and a local, integrated and tolerant periphery.[109]
The Great Chairman
Unlike other Asian megacorporations, Renraku has long been rather averse to spirituality. Unlike Shiawase, for example, Renraku refused to build corporate shrines and integrate Buddhist and Shinto rituals.[110]
This changed in the 2070s, where faith was gradually allowed, not least belief in Inazo Aneki, the group's kami. In line with the reorientation of the group under Shikei Nakatomi, a spiritual reorientation of the group has begun, based on the tradition of the samurai.[111]
And an important protagonist of this belief is Inazo Aneki, or Aneki Inazo no kami, who is now revered as a corporate deity. His books are required reading in corporate schools and training centers, and shrines in his honor can be found in all Renraku facilities[111] - something he had always fought against during his lifetime.[110]
Aneki was a devout Buddhist, at least he and his last trip to Tibet 2060 is now sold as such. After his officially announced death 2065, his share in Renraku went to a Buddhist religious community, as stipulated in his will. This community sold all but 1% of the shares, but still has an advisory seat on the board. Their influence, together with the upheavals under Shikei Nakatomi, and Renraku's efforts to regain privileged access to the Tenno, led to a spiritual spring in Renraku's ranks.[111]
After his death, and especially after Renraku's opening to corporate spiritualism under Nakatomi, he has become a kami - a patron saint, spirit, or minor god of Renraku.[111]
Inazo Aneki's spirit is invoked when a Renraku employee won't meet a deadline, when his charm and cunning are requested for negotiations, or his strategic foresight when creating a business plan. He may be dead, but he lives on in the prayers and thoughts of the millions of Renraku employees.[111]
Renraku, which previously actively sought to ban faith from its ranks, even having private shrines removed,[110] is now open to all forms of faith. The Group does not attempt to impose a corporate religion at all locations, but rather integrates itself into the local faith, whatever that may be. However, the Executive Board gives preference to Buddhism and Shintoism, which predominate in Chiba, for propaganda purposes when in doubt.[111]
Aneki Inazo no Kami also has its followers outside the group. Especially in the streets of Chiba - the former suburb of Neo-Tokyo that Renraku transformed so lastingly - shrines to the CEO-kami can be found everywhere.[112]
Corporate Daimyo
Renraku has undoubtedly remained a Japanese-owned company at its core. Nowhere is this more evident than in the heart of the corporation, in Neo-Tokyo's Chiba Ward. In Chiba, traditional corporate culture reigns without mercy, and the same is true throughout the Asia Division.[109] This culture is evident in many of the large and small idiosyncrasies of life within Renraku. The Seppuku of President Harry Nakada 2067 during the shareholders' meeting was an extreme example, but not the only one.[89]
The group's language is Japaneseish, and traditionalists within Renraku believe it is the only language needed. In fact, many Japanese-native speakers within Renraku do not speak a foreign language, and courses or Linguasofts are mandatory for non-native speakers.[110] Execs are almost exclusively older, Japanese men, Norms, and conservative. Dress and manners are strict and traditional, and Japanese values are upheld and celebrated.[109]
Consensus and loyalty are very important to Renraku. This not only leads to endless meetings that only end when everyone agrees to a business plan, but also to widespread fatigue. However, even if an employee nods off in a meeting, it is very unwelcome to point this out - it is expected to wake them up discreetly by reaching for the Kaf or in a similar way. Saving face is a duty, as is making this possible for colleagues. A lot of effort is invested in not embarrassing anyone, or even bringing shame on the company through one's own nakedness or misconduct.[109]
If you want to get ahead in this system, you have to adapt. Only those who know the intricacies of the bowing and greeting rituals of the conservative Japanese corporate world, who speak perfect Japanese, and who have proven their Japanese soul through sacrifice, have a chance of ascending to the highest spheres of Renraku. Happiness, leisure, family and one's own life must be subordinated to the good of the community. Only then will one have truly arrived in the culture that forms the heart of Renraku.[109]
The Periphery
The biggest difference between Renraku and other (not just Japanese-based) megacorporations is how they treat their subsidiaries. Renraku is an ultra-conservative Japanese company at its core, but when it buys into foreign countries, it has no problem adapting. Unlike Aztechnology, for example, Renraku does not want even the last employee of a subsidiary to speak the corporate language, nor (like Shiawase convert them to Shintoism.[109]
Although some of the management positions on the board will also be filled by old, human, male Japaneses, some will also be filled by local businessmen, and the division director is usually also recruited from the local population.[109]
Renraku likes to keep its distance from local subsidiaries, usually through two or three holding companies. Not to disguise who owns the company (as Aztechnology and Saeder-Krupp like to do), because they don't usually withhold that information. But so the locally known name is prefixed to the name Renraku.[109]
This has several advantages for Renraku. Firstly, the company can build on an existing brand identity and does not have to laboriously establish itself in a new market. Renraku can also build on the fact that, for the local population, it is not a faceless, large mega-corporation from outside, but a company with local relationships and connections that people can relate to locally. Renraku thus becomes part of the local culture - they are people you went to school with, or even family members. By blending its own corporate culture with the local culture, Renraku integrates itself in a way that other megacorporations are often denied - perhaps with the exception of Horizon. And thus secures a significant locational advantage.[109]
Conservatism
Renraku can rightly be described as 'value conservative'. Renraku plays safe, favors steady income over short-term gains plays a long-term game and always has an eye on tradition. This view is also reflected in the wider corporate culture. [113]
However, this conservative, martial and nationalistically charged corporate culture also contributes to Renraku's racism and problems with magic-giftedness[89] and the New Path Japans in general that Renraku has. Metahumans are tolerated, but should not be visible; women are to be subservient to men, and artificial life forms are to serve humanity.[113]
This manifests itself in many ways. Not only does Renraku have a problem with Evo because the megacorporation are a competitor - both that they pursue transhumanism like no other megacorporation, and that they have broken with Japan and thus a long tradition, and even discarded the name Yamatetsu, is an affront to everything that is important to Renraku's culture.[113]
A core of Japanese culture is always present in Renraku and can be seen, for example, in the sexual morals preached by the corporation. Renraku is extremely tolerant when it comes to (heterosexual) sexuality and wants to protect couples from any embarrassment. This is why the group operates "love hotels" in its enclaves - hotels by the hour where there are no cameras, microphones or staff. Giving guests their privacy is a matter of decency for the group, which outweighs any short-term political or business advantage.[114]
While Renraku has decided to open up to AIs despite the trauma that the SCIRE incident still represents, they remain wary of them, even if they could reap more rewards with more risk. An example of this is the refusal of the Group Executive Board to accept AI [Goldenboy]], which is one of the megacorporation's top traders, to transfer it to their London branch - so as not to jeopardize their second most important financial market by leaving it to an AI.[93]
As a traditionalist Japanese-style megacorporation, Renraku's corporate culture is riddled with racism towards metahumans - from problems promoting metahuman employees, to subtle dislike, to outright hate crimes (often committed by the Kigyo-Zoku Red Ronin[115]). Even though Renraku traditionally draws many of its common laborers from metamenschian communities, it has always let them know where their place is - at the bottom.[110]
Renraku justifies this by saying that the awakening was a violation of Japanese culture and that metahumans therefore have a moral duty to repent. This is often internalized by metahumans raised in Renraku, and they develop an internalized self-hatred and blame themselves for their own discredit.[116] Many corporate citizens who are metahumans, especially orcs and trolls, undergo metatype adaptation to become more acceptable to the corporate culture.[117] Renraku is not only a leader in this augmentation field, but also offers the most far-reaching treatments that effectively turn a troll into a very large norm.[118] Renraku is unforgiving towards rebellious metahumans - they are quickly cast out of the corporation.[116] However, for those who accept their lot, Renraku offers redemption - and a place in the Renraku family, albeit far below.[119]
Even mages don't have it easy. Despite the disadvantages they face as a result, Renraku has a superstitious and tendentially dismissive attitude towards magic.[89] Unlike many corporations, Renraku only conducts lax and sporadic tests for Aptitude-it is quite possible that a Renraku corporate citizen will go their entire life without learning of their talent.[110] In fact, Renraku culture has never truly accepted Awakening, and myths that UGE and magical aptitude are related persist.[89]
Technomancer did not have an easier time with Renraku. Together with MCT and NeoNET, they were the hardliners among the megacorporations in the early 2070s, who saw Virtuakinetes primarily as a threat - or as experimental subjects.[120]
Renraku's connections with arch-conservative and racist racist groups may not be common knowledge, but they are quite common in the Shadows. Sure, Renraku recruits metahumans, women, and even AIs, but also ensures that an appropriate Human Handler above them, lest they forget their place in the world.[113]
This attitude also carries over to the periphery, even if racism is less upheld here and comes across more quietly,[109] depending on the local culture. But a certain fear of the other, of change and upheaval is always inherent to Renraku, and they also find currents in every local culture that suit them and which they then support.[113]
Corporate family
With over 3 million registered SINs, Renraku has more corporate citizens than any other megacorporation. If you add employees who are not corporate citizens and employees of subsidiaries, this number adds up to almost eight million. In addition to an army of service workers, Renraku also employs many low-wage workers in its many factories in the former Third World.[121] Renraku calls the community of corporate citizens "The Renraku Family".[122] It is one big family.[121]
In his dealings with his corporate citizens, Renraku sees himself in the role of the caring parent who looks after his children and can be sure of their loyalty in return. This quickly turns into paternalism, at least for outsiders.[122] Internally, however, this is seen as part of the social contract - the corporation cares for its employees and corporate citizens, and in return they swear eternal loyalty.[110]
Renraku's corporate citizenship includes a corporate school system that indoctrinates children born into Renraku - but officially passed off as work-life balance and caring.[110] The schools now also actively promote the Aneki cult, portraying the revered Eternal CEO in the best possible light, as an astute business strategist and corporate shogun who protected and expanded his empire, a shrewd businessman, far-sighted politician, true patriot, devout Buddhist and brilliant scientist who formed one of the largest megacorporations in the world.[112] Renraku schools are open only to Renraku corporate citizens and are oriented towards the Japanese school system.[22]
Much of what the caring corporation teaches contains more or less subtle conditioning to xenophobia and neophobia - children are warned to wash their hands when in contact with outsiders, vaccinations and pre- and post-trip medical examinations are advised on vacation trips if one has had contact with locals, and travel advice likes to emphasize the dangers of non-corporate zones, or the poverty, crime, or lack of prospects there.[122]
Renraku was one of the first corporations to offer its corporation citizens full health care - as long as they moved within corporation territory. Employees and corporate citizens who are injured or fall ill outside the protective enclaves of the corporation must pay extra (or see how they get by).[123]
The corporation also operates a travel agency for Renraku members only, an archive where citizens can leave SimSinn records of their lives for their loved ones,[122] and, since the upheaval after the death of Inazo Anekis, shrines and temples.[111]
It is worth noting, however, that Renraku is quite serious about taking care of its corporate citizens. As stifling as the corporation's embrace may seem, there is a genuine interest in the well-being of its employees. If a worker is approaching burnout, the human resources department is encouraged to intervene and find out why.[113]
Where other mega-corporations would prescribe BTL mood chips or performance-enhancing drugs or recommend that the employee just pinch their ass, the prevailing view at Renraku is that everyone has their place within Renraku - and just needs to find it. Accordingly, transfers within the Group are straightforward and simple. It is not uncommon for employees to be transferred several times until they find a position where they feel comfortable. Renraku pays slightly less than other megacorporations for this, but a surprising number of people put up with it in order to have a job they don't hate.[113] Of course, this does not mean that Renraku does not prescribe therapeutic SimSinn chips, such as for chronic depression.[124]
Many corporate citizens thus actually feel deep loyalty to Renraku, far beyond the paycheck. Renraku doesn't mold its employees to do jobs, it molds jobs so that employees like them. Something you would expect to find in Horizon or Evo, but which is surprisingly deeply rooted in this paternalistic corporation.[113]
But Renraku's caring goes much further. Renraku was the megacorporation that widely deployed talent softss and data jackss to make its employees more productive.[110] And Renraku's youth culture, especially in the Asia division, promotes augmentations as early as six years old, for children entering school. All of this is embedded in an aggressive campaign for educational opportunities, duty to the corporation and religion.[112]
Those who are exposed to this indoctrination throughout their lives, however, develop a considerable fear of losing this support - of standing alone, without a place in the world to which they belong. Many Renraku corporate citizens are very afraid of this emptiness - which keeps them in the arms of the corporation, the Renraku family.[125] Not least because of this, many Renraku corporate citizens also dismiss drastic things, such as reports from survivors of the arcology crisis in the SCIRE, as propaganda from malcontents or other corporations. Thinking for themselves is something very few Renraku members dare to do.[126]
Young corporate savages
One effect of this indoctrination is a rebellion of young corporate children in puberty. The pride, the well-meaning authoritarian organization of corporate life, the predetermined path - it simply invites them to rebel against it![127]
But there is also something from the corporation,[127] in the form of Renraku's own Kigyo-Zoku - a corporate gang, tolerated and secretly promoted by the megacorporation, in which the (predominantly male) corporate youth can sow their wild oats: the Red Ronin.[115] This is an important outlet for corporate teenagers, a tolerated form of corporate kid rebellion.[127]
This is where the warrior culture that is so highly valued by Renraku comes into play:[113] Everything hinges on corporate pride and nationalism. If someone comes along who acts differently than the corporate spirit teaches, it is an enemy. The Red Ronin then put on their masks, and suddenly anyone who doesn't belong to them had better be somewhere else fast.[127] The soundtrack to their work is provided by the corporate e-punk band Renraku Corpkid Riot.[128]
This gang has existed since the 2050s and has since spread across the entire corporation. This makes the gang as global as the megacorporation.[115] Early on, also in the 2050s, the Red Ronin Red Ronin]] chapter in the Seattler Renraku arcology.[129] Leaders change as they grow older and rise in the ranks of the group, and with them the mentality of the gang, though it is rarely not at least violent. Their current leader is called Mika.[115]
The Red Ronin have been around long enough to tackle real criminal projects as well. They not only supply the stressed sararimen and rebellious corporate children with BTLs, drugs and other contraband (such as competing brands), but even organize gambling, prostitution and occasional armed robberies.[127]
A peculiarity of the Red Ronin is that they all wear masks when they are out as a gang, and otherwise hide the fact that they belong to the gang. This is because if they were caught or recognized while beating up a metahuman in some alley, they would lose their parents and thus the group's face - and they want to avoid that. They also look more threatening with masks on.[115]
Corporate uniforms
Renraku, like conservative Japanese culture in general, is characterized by a penchant for uniformity. wage slaves wear red coveralls issued by the corporation, office workers and middle management wear Hideo-Tato suits and ties with corporate monograms,[130] and Execs wear Europa, the posh business fashion brand Renrakus.[131]
However, the corporate uniforms again reflect Renraku's willingness to adapt to local circumstances. It is customary in local divisions to adhere to local fashion instead of wearing Japanese brands everywhere. In the ADL, where Renraku's headquarters is in Munich, the dress code is far more relaxed than in Renraku's headquarters.[132] Nevertheless, employees are encouraged, for example, to use clothing of the (Renraku-owned) Stadl brand.[133] Renraku goes particularly far in the Seattler Ork underground: here, the corporation, which has few metahumans among its corporate citizens, pays norms to be surgically transformed into Orks.[118]
A popular ritual is still Meishi, the exchange of physical business cards instead of digital contact information. High-ranking Execs make their cards by hand, showing that they have mastered calligraphy. Having such a card expresses that you have the eye of a high-ranking Exec on you, and thus their goodwill. There is a black market for such cards within the group.[134]
As a strictly hierarchically organized corporation, Renraku has a complex system of security and salary levels according to which all corporate citizens are rated (with less imaginative designations such as Renraku-4, Renraku-5, Renraku-6, ect.). This rather rigid system is also integrated into the corporation's security system and also gives Execs not involved in security powers to trigger or terminate alarms, so as not to produce large-scale deployments for every false alarm, which also cost something.[135] The Exec ranks begin from Renraku-10, everything below are better wage slaves.[136]
Concern Warriors
Renraku is steeped in a warrior macho culture oriented towards the ideals of bushido.[137] As one of the original Japanokons, Renraku has internalized this to the point that it can no longer be separated from the wider corporate culture.[113]
The myth of the samurai is propagated by Renraku at every opportunity. Corporate children grow up with the adventures of the sentai samurai, corporate teenagers read samurai manga or write haiku love beeps to themselves, and the stone-faced, utterly loyal, all-enduring samurai is the ideal to which everyone in the corporation is expected to aspire, and a prominent character in every corporate soap opera for wage slaves and execs alike.[113] The corporate samurai is the model corporate citizen. And when that is hammered into you for 20 years, you naturally believe it, and most Renraku Corporate Citizens do, even in the Periphery.[138] Anyone who does not fit this mold, whether because of gender or metatype, has a hard time rising in Renraku's ranks.[6]
Renraku also exports this social image, adapted to local conditions.[20] Through its media, its SimSinn and Trideo productions, and its employees. And they have been doing this for a long time, worldwide - and successfully. There's a reason why a street fighter in the UCAS calls himself a "street samurai."[138]
Bushido, the ancient Japanese warrior code adapted to local conditions, is at the heart of Renraku's culture. This allows the megacorporation to preserve a core of traditional Japanese values - hard work, honesty, honor, respect, and sacrifice - and build its local cultures around them. Even if the trappings are tailored to local circumstances, Renraku truly believes in these values and what they stand for.[20]
Renraku sees its employees and corporate citizens, unlike MCT or Aztechnology, as more than assets and cogs in the corporate machine. Influenced by a version of the Bushido code that dates back to the zaibatsu of the early 20th century, they are instead seen as integral and valuable parts of a greater whole. In Renraku, each employee is expected to strive to realize their full potential.[137] Renraku expects lifelong loyalty, and offers lifelong security in return.[110]
Each new Renraku citizen is presented with a wakizashi along with their SIN as a reminder of their status and these values. Of course, a normal Renraku citizen does not carry this weapon with them all the time, and of course it is a mass-produced blade of inferior quality. But it is a powerful symbol[138] - and one that, as the Seppuku of Haruhiko "Harry" Nakada with his wakizashi shows, is culturally charged.[20]
This has interesting implications. One of them is that Renraku citizens, unlike other corporate citizens, are not required to keep quiet at all costs. Sure, the chain of command within the corporation, rank and senority are sacred, but in the face of any external threat, the corporation must stand together, which is practiced by Execs and wage slaves alike.[137]
This reinforces the distrust of all outsiders. If a Renraku citizen notices anything unusual, it is reported immediately. And while most corporate drones would never risk their lives to protect their employer's profits, it is entirely possible for a Renraku citizen who has internalized samurai culture to stand up to attackers - knowing full well that they are outmatched and have no chance.[137]
But honor demands it.[137]
Everyone's friend
Surprisingly, Renraku is quite a popular group. Even if they are racist, they don't wear that too openly; Renraku enters new markets mostly discreetly, buying up local businesses and largely retaining local management, so little changes for customers, except that local vendors now have the support, logistics, and financial network of a megacorporations behind them.[109]
Renraku also has a sizable philanthropic department, which is very much exploited for PR purposes, but also does real relief work. Renraku is always committed to preserving and promoting local culture without asking for anything in return. They are friendly and willing to integrate, which makes them very popular.[109]
Renraku is also the largest provider of corporate-friendly resorts, offering them not only to its own corporate citizens, but to anyone interested. Anyone who can afford the price is invited to enjoy Renraku's hospitality.[109]
Finally, Renraku has positioned itself as a mediator. With its departments, it has good neutral grounds when two corporations need to settle something but do not want to do so through the corporate court, and can also provide neutral mediators.[109]
Renraku's asset in all of this is its data business. As a leading provider of data and computing services, Renraku would not have gotten far if they were spying on their customers.[109] In fact, Renraku strives for the principles of Bushido, especially the principle of Makoto, honesty and truthfulness.[113] Even the feared business butcher Shikei Nakatomi has not touched this principle because, after all, Renraku's business would not work without trust in his honesty.[109]
Historically, this attitude has evolved from Renraku's relatively weak position in the 2050s. Caught between the titans Fuchi, MCT and Saeder-Krupp, Renraku had to see how it survived, and it did so by becoming everyone's friend. Today, largely due to the third of Fuchi that fell to it after the Corporate War, it no longer has such problems, but the attitude remains,[113] mixed with Renraku's inherent conservatism.[22] Meanwhile, Renraku sees this as more of a sustainable business practice. In the short term, betraying the trust placed in the group would certainly bring profit, but in the long term it would diminish profit prospects.[22]
And Renraku thinks very long-term and conservatively.[22]
Corporate security
Renraku's corporate security is known as the Renraku Guard.[139]
Renraku's founder, Inazo Aneki, had a schizophrenic relationship with corporate security. He saw it primarily as a cost factor that needed to be minimized.[87] Gradually, however, the realization that corporate security was necessary took hold, and Renraku began to invest in their equipment and training, raising the level of security noticeably, but still to little more than average. When Renraku had major problems, it either sent in Red Samurai or recruited outside forces.[33]
After the SCIRE debacle, there was a group-wide security review, and new procedures were implemented - gradually raising Renraku's security almost to the level of MCT. Especially among members of the Renraku Guard, the Shutdown has left its mark, and corporate security wants to prove to itself and everyone else that such a catastrophe will not happen again.[108]
The result is a competent security department with a very high sense of duty - every alarm is taken seriously and scrupulously checked. However, Renraku tends to rely more on non-lethal weapons - not that they won't hurt intruders, but unlike MCT, they tend to leave it to breaking bones or cutting off the occasional body part.[108]
The Renraku Guard is tightly and militarily organized and uses the Japanese rank system. The transition between corporate security and corporate military is fluid. The highest-ranking security officer in a regional division has the rank of general. Together, the general and his staff are referred to as the Security Directorate.[140]
Physical Security
Renraku's physical security is well trained and equipped.[33] Renraku relies heavily on automation, but also has well-trained, equipped security personnel, often dressed in Modern Oyoroi armors.[141] Lighter-armored guards also have a red uniform.[142]
For a long time, however, the Renraku Guard forces were relatively thinly staffed, and attempts to compensate for this with high-tech were only partially successful. Furthermore, it was deployed in a fluctuating fashion - important facilities were well secured, but what was not considered important was significantly understaffed. Renraku often compensated for this by hiring Ares or another Police Service Provider to step in at short notice.[33] Meanwhile, Renraku also uses its own forces for this, such as the Police Service Provider Najima Securities.[108]
Renraku's security forces are notorious for being quick to resort to lethal force.[143]
Guardian Critter
As early as the 2050s, the megacorporation, which was actually rather skeptical of magic Guard knights such as Barghests.[144] Renraku has increased its use of trained Critters since the early 2060s, regularly using Barghests, Dreadcocks, Hellhounds, and even Harpyes as additional security measures at its locations.[145]
Renraku classifies all non-metahuman security assets as property. This is an expression of the conservative and subliminally Magic- and Awakening-hostile attitude of the megacorporation. This also affects sapient critters, such as nagas and dragons.[146]
Magical Security
Renraku's magical security has long been as structured as its physical - high quality personnel, stretched thin, and deployed primarily at focal points.[33] The well-known skepticism of magic in Renraku's ranks does not mean that the corporation is lax here.[89] Mages are not suited for clerical or assembly line work, but they are equipped with unparalleled skills for industrial espionage. And where there are offensive mages, there needs to be defensive magics.[91] The attitude is that if the other side uses it, counter accordingly. Renraku's security mages are similarly competent to those of other corporations - only the security mage will never be in command.[89]
Matrix security
Renraku's matrix security has always been excellent. Where the corporation otherwise skimped on security, here Inazo Aneki also saw a reason not to skimp.[33] Renraku's matrix security has always been powerful and downright hostile to intruders. In addition to ICE, Renraku has always employed many security deckers.[147]
Renraku has always purchased powerful ICE, but is able and willing to design and use its own as well.[33] Renraku's ICE is considered very black - the corporation has no qualms about using deadly programs.[148] Since matrix security services are one of Renraku's mainstays, it would be a fatal sign if the Group's systems were found to be failing in the event of an attack, so unlike other security divisions, it has never cut corners here. Should physical security fail, this would also be bitter, but of comparatively little economic significance.[149]
Despite her traumatic experience with Deus, Renraku has gradually opened up to the new second-generation AIs and now actively uses them to improve his Matrix security. But Renraku has remained cautious: Here, the AIs are engaged with human partners and have no direct command authority.[150]
Securitech International
While GOD oversees the Matrix as a whole, Renraku's Securitech International AG Renraku's internal grid security. 'Decker of Securitech secure all important hosts of Renraku, and also offer these services to smaller groups. [Securitech International AG|Securitech]] has a good reputation when it comes to Matrix criminals and hunting down undesirable elements such as Technomancers and AIs, and is considered to be as tough as GOD itself.[151]
Corporate military
Template:Main article Renraku's corporate paramilitary units, and not just the Red Samurai, are feared, and rightly so.[16] While Renraku claims to have no corporate military, this is mainly because these units are officially listed as security units, despite having military equipment - tanks, fighter planes. Some of these "guardsmen" are even active in the Desert Warss.[33] Many Renraku samurai serve as officers or in separate units in the corporate forces.[152]
To secure its interests and protect its trade routes, Renraku maintains a navy organized around a carrier group. In addition to escort ships and the aircraft carrier, the Renraku navy also has ships from which state-of-the-art cruise missiles can be fired.[153]
If all this is not enough, Renraku is also the largest minority owner of the mercenary corporation Tsunami, and can fall back on this rentable army in case of doubt.[154]
Corporate Intelligence
Renraku has a multi-layered internal and external intelligence apparatus.[155]
InternalSecurity
Renraku has a very active Internal Security that is often categorized as Red Ninja, even though they have no training whatsoever. They are simply normal employees who keep an eye on what's going on in the company, monitor their employees and are supposed to recognize sabotage, extractions and fraud at an early stage and report them to corporate security. Quite normal counter-intelligence, but the Red Ninja label gives them a mystical aura and ties them into the corporate narrative of Japanese bushido culture.[155]
However, these agents have one thing in common with the mystical ninja - they cannot be seen, and they are very good at quietly observing and not revealing themselves, only to deliver a devastating blow to the back when they are not expected.[156]
Konzernspione
Renraku operates two different corporate intelligence services from different traditions: Keruba Military Solutions and Fuchi Intelligence Systems. The former is part of Renraku's nucleus and is broadly based, in all relevant areas; the latter, on the other hand, came with Fuchi's remnants and focuses on Electronic Intelligence.[157]
The group also has the Singapore-based Market Research Group, a division of Xiao-Renraku at Renraku Asia, which carries out Big Data evaluations for customers or in the interests of the group, and also conducts industrial espionage and counter-espionage.[158]
Black Ops
Renraku has, compared to the other AAA corporations, a very small black ops division.[155] For important operations, they have the Red Ninja, but in general Renraku views such operations as dishonorable and against the corporate code. However, Renraku would never have become a megacorporation if it couldn't think pragmatically. And the solution for Renraku is outsourcing - to the Shadows.[159] Therefore, they are one of the biggest employers for Shadowrunners - who have no honor, are not members of the Renraku family, so it doesn't matter how much they degrade themselves in service to the corporation[155]
Elite units
Renraku Samurai
Renraku Samurai[160] are the elite of the Renraku Guard.[93] Still far from being Red Samurai, they are nevertheless better equipped and often employed in higher positions.[113]
Not eligible to wear the Modern Oyoroi Armour of the Red Samurai[161], they instead wear modified, enhanced heavy armor like that used by parts of the Renraku Guard.[113] They are also reinforced with a set of Cyberwares - Reflex Boosters, Artificial Muscles, Smartlinks, all Alphawares. Not much compared to some street samurai, but not a bad set either.[113] In addition, Renraku Samurai are given a Daisho - a set of katana and tanto - when they rise to this rank. These weapons are standard, mass-produced and factory-made, but quite usable.[138]
The training of a renraku samurai is much more extensive than that of a simple renraku garsdist. Not only must swordplay be mastered, but marksmanship with firearms is also required. In fact, Renraku samurai often avoid rapid-fire weapons and prefer semi-automatic rifles and pistols - to show that every shot is a hit for them.[113]
Joining the ranks of the Renraku Samurai is above all a position of prestige. These security forces consider themselves elite and close to the bushido ideal of the Renraku code. Renraku samurai always carry and train with their ritual weapons, and are always ready to protect honor and the Renraku family.[138] In addition to working as regular security personnel, they are deployed as special forces at Neo-PD and Najima Securities,[162] as bodyguards for Execs or in the corporate military.[152]
Unlike the Red Samurai, the Renraku Samurai also take metahumans, especially orcs,[162] and women[163] into their ranks. Nevertheless, they are also mostly male and only Norms and Elfs are considered for leadership roles. Female Renraku Samurai are mostly used as bodyguards for high-ranking officials, while Orcs are mainly used as frontline fighters (where they rarely grow old), and never hold more than the lower ranks of the organization.[152]
The Blue Samurai of Renraku Oceania[101] are organizationally a sub-grouping of the Renraku Samurai.[152] The Renraku Samurai operate a large training facility in Korea, where they train primarily women, metahumans and other imperfect Renraku citizens who would be accepted into the ranks of the Red Samurai if not for their "flaws".[164]
Red Samurai
The Red Samurai are the elite paramilitary units of the Renraku Guard.[165] No corporate unit is as feared and respected as Renraku's Red Samurai,[16] which the unit has worked hard to achieve.[165] The Red Samurai are famous for their Japanese samurai-style red full body armor, which is actually of high military standards.[166] They are the corporate equivalent of Beefeaters, and like them, trained elite fighters who should be taken seriously.[156]
The Red Samurai were founded in 2029 together with Renraku.[163] Inazo Aneki established them in his new corporate headquarters of what was then still called Keruba International. Initially, the Red Samurai were merely Inazo Aneki's Praetorian Guard, a unit that looked much more dangerous than it was.[87] Well-armed, in their distinctive armor, but without real training, they would have been massively inferior to any real special forces unit. But they stroked Aneki's ego and looked cool, so he spun stories around them and invested money in them.[33] Nowadays, the Red Samurai are a real fighting unit, with a level of training on par with that of the Japanese army's special forces.[6] They operate in tightly knit groups of 5 men, with overlapping skills so that the loss of one team member can be compensated for by others. The only exception is magic - Red Samurai teams have only one awakened team member,[141] usually a Spell Sorcerer, but often an Adepts as well.[167]
Today's Red Samurai have gradually become what they were initially claimed to be, not least due to the influence of Yukiako Watanabe, the longtime chairman of the board.[33] They are absolutely loyal to the corporation, especially to Eternal CEO Inazo Aneki.[165] They take an oath to him and the board known as the "Red Oath"[163] - a traditional Japanese Keppan, an oath signed with one's own blood that pledges loyalty for life.[156] Red samurai see themselves as the highest form of corporate bushido and the sworn guardians of the corporation, and maintain a deep contempt for all who are below them in rank or honor. This only affects other Corporate Citizens to a limited extent, but they are downright hostile towards employees or even Corporate Mans.[168]
The Red Samurai are under the sole command of the CEO or Chairman of the Board.[156] The unit comprises about 1000 men[152] and is based in Chiba, at Renraku's headquarters.[167]Since the unit's founding, no woman[163] and only a few metahumans (all elfs) have been accepted into the unit.[169]
Red Ninja
This unit is the exact opposite of the Red Samurai. Where the latter are flamboyant and heavily armed warriors, the Red Ninja are sleek inconspicuous agents, often Social Adepts or Facedancers highly equipped with bioware, quietly going about their no less deadly business.[6] And, unlike the highly publicized Red Samurai, Renraku denies the existence of the Red Ninja, and conflating the term with Internal Security agents also helps to disguise their existence.[155]
But they do exist, a unit of trained ninja working for Renraku.[155] There werefor a long time that Renraku has his own ninja order.[156]
Rumor has it that the Red Ninja's training facility is a public dojo called Yagyu Ryu. This is where the megacorporation recruits candidates for its espionage and assassination program. The Red Ninja are equipped by Renraku with augmentations in Delta quality and are also provided with memory manipulation technology in order to be more effective in deep cover operations. They are also trained in classical ninjutsu.[170]
According to the training and tactics used, the order goes back to the teachings of the Koga ninja clan, with whom Renraku is said to have a silent training agreement.[156]
The ranks of the Red Ninja are more diverse than those of other Renraku units. They have both Adepts and Bioware-modified infiltrators[156] (although the number of Adepts is far less than Augmenteds[155]), and even a number of kuniochi (female ninja). They are trained in infiltration and assassination, and often work undetected and undercover in rivals and organizations that Renraku has fallen out with.[156] This allows them to act secretly and undetected, something the Red Samurai deliberately deny themselves. In the end, they are nothing more than undercover agents and corporate assassins.[155]
Renraku uses the Red Ninja when they need a stiletto, not a daisho, to defeat an enemy.[156]
Corporate Justice
Renraku's internal justice system is draconian. Modeled after the Japanese culture of the Edo period, it is legitimate for a Renraku samurai or even a Red Samurai to kill someone who has touched their blades.[138] The corporation imposes the death penalty quite liberally, and it is generally recognized as a punishment for severe disloyalty.[171] Even high corporate officials can fall from grace and are severely punished by the corporate justice system, as Sherman Huang experienced.[62]
Renraku's corporate justice system has a legitimate reputation for expressing the racism of the corporation as well, and for example, consensual sexual relations between a human Renraku corporate citizens and a metahumans as adultery (even if the corporate citizens in question were not married at the time of contact).[172] In addition, Renraku is accused of suppressing internal dissidence in this way.[171]
A possible punishment for minor offenses is Seppuku. This is traditionally ritual suicide offered as an excuse for failure in order to save the honor of one's family. In the context of a Japanokon, this means that an Exec or wage slave found guilty of serious business failure or embezzlement or a similar crime is given the opportunity to end his life, usually by throwing himself into his wakizashi or tanto, rather than receiving the intended punishment.[70]
If the Corporate Citizen does so, his family and children are allowed to remain part of the Renraku family without suffering for his failure, with full pay, privileges, and a decent pension. His (seppuku is reserved for men, although women may be allowed an alternative ceremony with jigai) death has atoned for his sins. However, if a corporate citizen found guilty of such a crime were to refuse seppuku, his wife and children would end up on the street with him.[70]
Relationships
The relationship with Wuxing Incorporated, as with the other Japanokons, including Mitsuhama and Shiawase, is anything but green, not least because Wuxing is doing everything it can to break the "economic stranglehold of Japanese corporations in the Pacific region" through the Pacific Prosperity Group.[173]
Renraku has Level 2 cooperation with Lone Star, which includes extensive information and data sharing, as well as permission to provide a liaison who then participates in local investigations. Extraditions are handled on a case-by-case basis.[174]

In the ADL, Renraku operates the local GridGuide offshoot ALI.[357] With the Asphalt-Cowboys-München in the DSKL, the group owns a professional Urban Brawl/urban war team.
Alongside Saeder-Krupp, Renraku is the AAA corporation with the strongest presence in Germany.[178] In 2057, Karl Stadt announced plans to bring the European headquarters of the megacorporation to Germany.[358] Renraku's ADL headquarters had already been relocated from Berlin to Munich during the Corporate War in 2058[199].[104] As one of the most important headquarters of the Group, the headquarters of the European Regional Division is protected by a company of Red Samurai, and also has the equivalent of three companies of Renraku Samurai, as well as smaller task forces.[178]
In Berlin, where Renrakusan (formerly Prenzlauer Berg[359]) is completely exterritorial Renraku Group territory, Renraku is mainly present as a service provider for other Group enclaves and with research sites.[360] In addition to Renrakusan, the megacorporation also owns the impressive Renraku Building at Alexanderplatz.[361] One Renraku project making waves is the 2072 AR- and VR-supported learning project "Open Minds" as an educational offer for the disadvantaged. Despite backlash from anarchist circles that it covers up an ethically questionable brainwashing program called "Open Thoughts", with which the megacorporation wants to turn orphans into well-behaved corporate citizens,[362] Renraku is now trying to use "Open Minds" as a jump into the German education system.[133] Renraku had always been one of the staunchest opponents of anarchy in the city and repeatedly made moves against it.[363] Furthermore, Renraku also owns one of the three towers of the Japan Business Center.[364]
In Düsseldorf, Renraku operates extensive office complexes, which are well secured.[365] Here, mainly thought work is carried out - PR and research. The core of the Renraku compound is a chrome-and-glass pyramid, which glows matt red from the inside.[366]
In Erfurt[365], Renraku operates a large Gaz-Niki factory[133], several server farms, and a large research center.[133]
In Hamburg, Blohm + Voss operates a large shipyard for ships, boats and hovercrafts.[106] However, the headquarters were moved to the Munich Renraku Arkology.[178] Furthermore, their group-owned trucking company TransLad is very present in Hamburg, as is the Store-You chain of rental warehouse complexes throughout the city. In addition, there is a growing number of small franchise businesses that belong to Renraku via a few corners, and the offer of their "Portal24" brokerage apps, which help you find a handyman, hairdresser or babysitter as well as a used car, and with which the data octopus from Chiba competes with the local hero DeMeKo on its very own Hometurf. [257] The company also takes care of the highly complex Daneel expert system, which keeps the Freeport Trade Zone running. Renraku has doubled the number of technicians on site, especially since the system has been very reluctant to keep to its precise schedule.[367]

Schwarzen Sheriffs, who came under heavy criticism in the wake of the Olympiapark massacre in the Year of the Comet.[373] These incidents (and general racism) make Renraku a favorite opponent of local politicians.[374]
In the 'SOX, Renraku runs several laboratories for hardware research[236]and has long sat on the 'Control Council.[122] The research centers are among the largest Renrakus in the German-speaking world.[133] Renraku is also a regular Rad-Wars participant with its corporate forces.[375] In the arcology of the corporation in the SOX in the north of the zone, Renraku operates huge offline storage facilities and allegedly a Technomancer prison.[376] In its role on the Control Council, the corporation is responsible for zone IDs, access, and also bureaucracy.[377]
In Unna, Renraku operates an small arcology next to the arcology of Saeder-Krupp, which the corporation took over from Fuchi in the course of the corporate war[378] which is now home to one of Renraku's largest research centers.[133]
The company has also been represented in the Troll Republic of the Black Forest since its opening to corporations. Renraku focuses primarily on traffic and transportation.[379]
In 2070, Renraku's matrix security succeeded in Munich Gitter to capture an AI named "Bethal" and transfer it to the SOX for investigation, but only a year later the AI was freed by E-Wall. Bethal was subsequently instrumental in building the underworld syndicate known as Shader.[380]

In Amazonia, Renraku is the new megacorporation ally since Horizon hastily left the country after losing the war against Aztlan. The young South America division of Renraku is currently mainly occupied with arms deals, with which Amazonia wants to expand its regular armed forces.[107]
Renraku is also using drones to combat the Sangre del Diablo plague in the former war zones, as the machines are unaffected by the Paraflora's hypnotic abilities.[107]
Renraku are heavily invested in Amazonian agriculture,[94] where they use the 6000 square kilometer Born Futuro Plantation' for the most intensive cultivation of soybeans and other food staples.[382]

Renraku Australia, the largest subdivision of Renraku Oceania, is known as the least conservative and most innovative division of the megacorporation.[102] One such innovation, an attempt in the 2070ss to magically green the outback with genetically engineered plants, backfired badly, as the plants actually grew, but then quickly withered, draining the last of the soil's nutrients.[105]
In Sydney, Renraku is a member of the Sydney Metropolitan Council.[23] The headquarters of Renraku Oceania is also located here.[99] Many of Renraku's activities, such as the observation of mana storms in the Outback, originate from here.[105]
In Cairns, Renraku is a member of the Cairns Metropolitan Council.[23]
In Perth, Renraku is primarily involved in shipbuilding, primarily through large shipyard facilities owned by Harland & Wolff.[383] In general, Renraku maintains a major branch here.[99]
At Wittenoom, Renraku operates an asbestos mine.[102]
On Tasmania, Renraku 2046 attempted to build a prison, but it was mysteriously completely depopulated and written off as a total loss.[384]
With Baird Communications, formed after the Crash of 2029 from Telstra and smaller providers, Renraku is a near monopolist in Australia's matrix provider market, and operator of the state grids.[186] Baird is known to strongly prioritize the sprawls where affluent customers are located over the countryside (or even the outback).[385]

In Pretoria-Witwatersrand-Vaal, Renraku operates all traffic control infrastructure.[389] The group also operates the large Midtown Market, the largest and safest open market in the Sprawl, which is also a major tourist attraction.[390] The extensive tunnel and subway system beneath the Sprawl in its underground arcologys is also partly operated by Renraku (in cooperation with MCT).[391] Renraku uses its dominant position in the field of traffic management to provide advantages for its own service offerings and to expand its position of power in Azania.[392]

Renraku still groups the successor states under the label Renraku China, just to emphasize how conservative the group is. The constantly warring shards of the great China are the largest sales market for Terracotta Armaments[102] and a place where Renraku gets rid of (even faulty) overproduction.[97]
Renraku is one of the largest landowners in the Chinese successor states, and operates extensive cultivation areas for rice and soybeans, raw materials that Renraku then sells to other corporations for refinement.[382]
In addition, the Chinese Successor States, like India, are a market of one billion poor metahumans that Renraku can exploit and provide with goods and services. Renraku is also deeply involved in human trafficking in the region - under the pretext of matchmaking, chipped and unchipped brides (and some grooms) are brokered by Renraku all over the world.[102]

Renraku's relationship with the radical Maoist Splinter State China]] is curious, but highly profitable for the megacorporation. Renraku operates a lot of agriculture, food processing, chemical and biotech industries and large production facilities in Henan.[394]
In Bengbu, Renraku operates a large agri-cultural Arcology, where Renraku also conducts genetic research.[394]
Shaanxi
Renraku has a lot of factories and smaller offices in the Splinter State, and still has good contacts to the current royal family from Keruba times, which makes Renraku the state's most important weapons supplier.[395]
In Xi'an, Shaanxi's capital, Renraku operates extensive factory complexes.[396]
Confederation of American States
Renraku has a noticeable presence in every state of the CAS.[382] The megacorporation has invested heavily in its reputation in the southern states, and this (and a certain shared penchant for racism) pays off for Renraku.[397]
Renraku is rebuilding the school system in the CAS states, which had abolished compulsory education and felt the effects.[83] In addition, Renraku operates many agricultural areas in the CAS, where they mainly grow soybeans.[382] Renraku is also present throughout the country with various resorts and tourism services.[382]

Renraku has good relations with the nobility in France. Whether it's old-fashioned views, backroom deals or dislike of metahumans, they get along.[93] Renraku and the state cooperate closely in the area of matrix security. Renraku also has a good relationship with the French authorities, who often maintain liaison officers and teams on site.[103]
In Marseille, Renraku operates highly profitable biotech research alongside heavy industry. A Red Samurai unit is also stationed here.[103] Quite a provocation given Saeder-Krupp's overwhelming presence in the city.[403]
In Lyon, Renraku is primarily concerned with agribusiness and magical research and artifact production.[103]
In Paris, Renraku Europa operates an arcology that is one-tenth the size of the building in Seattle[404] and the large electronics department store Méta-Deck.[405] Renraku Paris researches and develops computer and cyber technology, and maintains several chemical plants in Paris and Île de France. The group's main business is in cyberware, data processing and software.[103]
In Toulouse, the old headquarters of Renraku Europe, Renraku has its local headquarters, and is mainly active in the aerospace sector, military technology, Toulouse also operates several factories producing consumer goods, and is a sponsor of some local sports teams including collecting societies.[103]
Free State of California
The headquarters of the California division is San Francisco,[188] headquartered in the 97-story [406] Renraku Building', one of the largest skyscrapers in the city.[407] In the meantime, Renraku America managed itself from San Francisco after losing the SCIRE.[408] In San Francisco, Renraku still maintains a strong presence after the end of the Japanese occupation, and try to repair their reputation somewhat through public donations and charitable work.[409]

Front Range Free Zone
Renraku has never had a particularly strong presence in Denver. After the Arcology Crisis, Renraku established many of its subsidiaries once located at the now defunct North American headquarters in various NANs, while the larger parts of the company relocated to Manhattan.[410] As a result, the megacorporation is still primarily present with HyperSense in the Front Range Free Zone.[411]
In addition, Architectural Dynamics, real estate developers of malls and office buildings, and the weapons manufacturer Terracotta Armaments are increasingly active in Denver.[410]
Indian Union
Renraku's Indian presence is a gigantic sales market for the Group's products and services. In addition to Bollywood products, which Renraku markets heavily, and the huge pool of cheap labor and lax environmental regulations (even by Sixth World standards), India is above all a billion customers for Renraku to sell food, clothing, consumer electronics and services of all kinds to.[102]
Together with Saeder-Krupp, MCT and Shiawase, Renraku is involved in the expansion of the mega infrastructure project Golden Quadrilateral[412]
In Bombay, Renraku operates a smaller arcology.[102]
In Chennai Renraku had its India Indian]] headquarters,[99] which has since been relocated to Arcology in Calcutta.[102] However, there is still a very strong presence of the Japanokon.[99] Renraku is part of the MBC Corridor Consortium, which aims to revitalize the old South Indian tech industry on the Mangalore-Bangalore-Chennai axis.[413]
Renraku's regional HQ is in Kolkata, where the group also operates a smaller arcology.[102] With SimScapes, Renraku operates one of the largest Indian MPSs.[413]
Regionally, Renraku has a surprisingly large presence in the construction industry, which it exploits to use cheap but unsafe materials such as asbestos mined in Australia, pay dumping wages, and source its sand cheaply from the sand mafia.[102]
Indonesia
Another area where Renraku simply refuses to acknowledge that the that country has gone under. Renraku mainly operates huge plantations in the former Indonesia, producing vast amounts of palm oil.[102] In addition, Renraku produces palm oil in factories in Indonesian Sprawls, which it then sells partly in Asia, but partly, refined with new casings into Renraku products, in Europe.[414]
In Jakarta, Renraku operates an arcology that houses all of their Asian linguistics research and many financial, real estate and consulting services.[102]
In Bandar Seri Begawan, Renraku maintains a large branch office,[99] from which it exerts great influence over the Dayak Council territories formerly belonging to Malaysia and Brunei. Renraku is actively involved in Malaysia's struggle to reclaim the territories.[331]

Renraku has important branches in the Free City of Trieste in the Italian Confederation.[104]
Empire of Japan
In Japan, the megacorporation operates other large facilities in Neo-Tokyo in addition to its headquarters in Chiba.[99] Here, in Chiba's Renraku arcology,[212] is also the headquarters of the corporation.[415] The Arcology is strictly shielded and guarded by various teams of Red Samurai.[416] Renraku's Clinics in Chiba are considered the best in the world, and indeed they are.[417] Renraku's corporate headquarters on Makuhari Promenade[418] dominates the skyline of Chiba like its arcology dominates that of Seattle.[419] In Nishi-Shinjuku, Renraku has a second giant building in Neo-Tokyo - Fuchi Tower, formerly the headquarters of Fuchi Industrial Electronics.[419] Renraku is also the main sponsor of Gotoko-Ji Temple, the shrine of Maneki-Neko.[420] Renraku is omnipresent in Chiba, but the influence of the megacorporation is also strong in the wider Neo-Tokyo sprawl. Renraku is the operator of all public databases in Neo-Tokyo. As a result of this and other activities, Renraku is by far the most visible megacorporation in the Megasprawls.[112]
Off the coast of Chiba lies Aneki Island, a Renraku showroom named after its Eternal CEO. The island is home to nightclubs, bars, resorts and a huge mall, all networked with an intelligent computer system that can analyze each visitor and make tailored suggestions based on their presumed preferences - club visits, shopping offers and even singles with similar preferences that the system sees an opportunity with. Aneki Island is a popular dating location in Neo-Tokyo.[418]
In Kyoto, Renraku operates the Red Samurai Academy', the training ground for its iconic elite unit. The group cooperates with the Ranken-Ryu and other martial arts academies to guide their best graduates into their training programs.[421]
In Nagano lies Renraku's Delta Clinic, which the megacorporation has taken over from Fuchi.[422] Allegedly, Renraku owns another Delta Clinic directly in Chiba.[418]
Renraku is appointed as Economic Advisor to Tenno and the Diet[23] As a Japanokon affiliated with the Imperialist faction, Renraku supports the Divine Heritage Party, hard-core nationalists, and the governor of Neo-Tokyo Prefecture, Saburo Koga, who is also a hard-core nationalist. Renraku also enjoys good relations with the Japanese army and the Watada-rengo, who are also ideologically in line with the nationalists.[423] However, they do not agree with Emperor Yasuhito's course and, like some other groups, have positioned themselves against it. Yasuhito does not want to allow growth at the expense of places and traditions that are deeply rooted in Japanese society. He also calls for the unity of the country and loyalty to Japan as the highest duties, even for corporations. However, the group is quite sympathetic to his attempts to revive traditionalism in the country.[424]

Renraku had long struggled with problems at its African cyberware factories, which produced omegaware instead of the hoped-for quality products. However, this was resolved at the end of the 2070s and the quality was brought up to the desired level.[97]

Despite Japans withdrawal as an occupying power, Renraku retains some installations in the country, some of which are protected by units formerly belonging to the Japanese army that have defected to Renraku.[434] The megacorporation is the main matrix provider in Peru.[13]
Philippines
In the past, Renraku maintained a corporate enclave on the island of Luzon in the Philippines archipelago, but it was conquered by either Evo or Wuxing when they assisted the HUK government in reclaiming the island. In the 2070s, however, Renraku received permission to resettle locally, albeit under close scrutiny by the HUK and Masaru. The Japanokon has used the authorization to proceed with the construction of its Underwater Arcology in the protected waters off the coast of Manila.[435]
Renraku's presence in the Philippines is surprising, considering the hostility the crew has aroused toward Japanokons here. But Renraku has skillfully integrated itself into the local culture - a prime example of the corporation's ability for social engineering. Instead of coming under criticism itself, the corporation has emphasized the culpability of Shiawase and MCT. And because Renraku emerged here as a savior in the wake of an economic crisis caused by the collapse of Baihu Corporation in the Dragon Civil War, it is now seen by more than a few Filipinos as a savior rather than an oppressor, even though Renraku controls nearly a third of the archipelago's economy.[105] In addition, Renraku operates resorts and docks for its cruise ships in the country.[382]
